One of the most unique and innovative electronic artists out there, Four Tet, releases his most recent album There Is Love In You. Amazing and very highly recommended.
Deadboy is only the latest in a long line of moderately obscure London producers that are starting to create a buzz for themselves, but this one seems well worth the hype. With his debut release under his belt already, the U Cheated EP, Deadboy creates some of the freshest takes out there on UK garage, funky, and all that other British stuff that none of the Americans reading this are probably terribly aware of. Just trust me, you'll want to take a listen below. You can grab the EP at Redeye.
Sorry to be so absent lately; I was out of town on some IAMSOUND duties and was barely able to use the computer, let alone get on this thing! Anyway, upwards and onwards...
Golden Triangle are (get ready...) "garage"y/lo-fi/etc in that oh-so-popular 2009 way, but they're also remarkably catchy, and while they might not seem to be terribly unique on paper, take a listen to "Prize Fighter" below and you'll see why I can't get this song out of my head. They recently signed with Hardly Art Records (Sub Pop's sub label).
Ok so all this year I have kind of been hating on all of this "surf-rock" and lo-fi shit that everyone seems to be loving (e.g. Wavves and every other self-described buzz band), but I heard Eternal Summers the other week and, I'll be a monkey's uncle, I kind of love it. "Able To" was the track that sucked me in and "Lightswitch," well that was an MP3 someone forwarded to me, so I'm posting it. I think part of it might be because a girl sings in Eternal summers, and all HSB readers know I am a sucker for female vocals, and this stuff is way catchier than any of that other stuff that's come out this year. Their Eternal Summers EP (self-released) was released earlier this year, another EP coming soon, and then their album.
This doesn't mean I still don't intensely dislike most of these lo-fi/I can't tune my guitar/"surfcore" bands though.
Are The Horrors leading another Jesus-and-Mary-Chain-sounding revival again? Perhaps, but I'm not really complaining. I don't know much about Ivansxtc, only that he is from the UK and sounds like the My Bloody Valentine/Salem/Jesus and Mary Chain/etc school which we all (or at least I) love.
Theoretically, if I stuck to my "one More Music Monday post a week" schedule like I had originally envisioned this, then I would have started doing these posts a year ago. However, it's definitely been at least a couple of years, since some weeks there just aren't new bands, some weeks I'm busy, and just some weeks, to be honest, I don't feel like writing a post. HSB is a temperamental blog.
With most of the new electronic scene dominated by Europeans at least the past few years, it's always nice to see some innovative and intriguing electronica coming from our shores, especially a city as unexpected as St. Louis. Known more for Nelly in the past 10 years than anything remotely electronic, St. Louis has now given us producer Phaseone, up until now has really only been known for his remixes of Burial, Panda Bear, Bloc Party and a few others. His original material is just as strong as his remixes though (look out soon for a remix of IAMSOUND artist Fool's Gold), and the best part is that he is giving his away his debut album Thanks But No Thanks for the amazing price of free.
Summer is in full swing now, and summertime jams should be dominating everyone's playlists at the moment. What may be one of the best summertime jams this year is jj's "From Africa to Málaga," a gorgeous, relaxing tune from the fine folks at Sincerely Yours (Air France, Tough Alliance). Appropriately enough, it sounds like it almost could be an Air France side-project, and it could be, we have no idea. They are taking this whole mysterious thing to a completely new level, with no myspace, website, OR EVEN TWITTER. DEAR LORD!
Does it matter who they are though? Just listen, and if you are feeling generous, support them by purchasing. Unfortunately not on vinyl yet.
In one aspect, I'm insanely late on Threat Misses. They haven't logged into their myspace profile since August of 2008, and footage of girls dancing to their song "Juke Ya Girl" was uploaded two years ago to youtube. However, looking at it the other way, not a single other person has posted on them, so I can't be that late, can I?
Anyway, I know almost nothing about Threat Misses other than what I can figure out from their myspace - a group of young female rappers from Universal City, Texas (just outside of San Antonio), who are probably still in high school or were at the time they recorded. It's entirely possible that they're not even together anymore and that this song I'm about to discuss is just their swan song, their Shape of Punk to Come. I heard their song "Juke Ya Girl" on the Salem mixtape I posted about last week, fell in love with it, and had to look it up more. "Juke Ya Girl" is a slow, booty-grinding (obviously, "juking") jam that, well, just watch the video below and you'll get the idea of what it should do to you (NSFW? I can't tell why her shirt is off in half the video and on in the other half). I've never claimed to be an expert on hip hop but this will likely be stuck in my iTunes playlists for quite a while.
Note: the song below is really low-quality, as you can't really find the song anywhere...
EDIT: MP3 link wasn't working, it's now been fixed.
Brooklyn duo The Hundred In The Hands begs the question - do we really need another duo from Brooklyn making catchy, hip dance/pop music? (Hint: yes)
The band consists of Jason Friedman of The Boggs as well as Eleanor Everdell, who contributed vocals for TV On The Radio, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, etc., and so far they've only released one single, "Dressed In Dresden," but show incredible promise. I've heard their newer songs and I would be very surprised if they weren't the next big thing come next spring or whenever they finally release them to the world, so keep them on your radar for now. This single (below) is good, but the stuff that will hit eventually, it's even better.
Golden Silvers are currently on tour in the UK opening for HSB faves Florence and the Machine, and they came to my attention from a mix tape (well, on a CD) that dropped in my lap a while back. What is it? Dance-able, electronic-influenced pop from the UK, of course. What the hell else would I write about on here?
Anyway, once their debut album drops, you can be sure they will be the hot new band all over everywhere a la Friendly Fires/Phoenix/etc.
Men is the new project of JD Samson from Le Tigre, with members of Ladybug Transister, LTTR, and help from other Le Tigre members. Considering Le Tigre's sociopolitical bent, it makes sense that, according to Men's myspace, Men talks about "wartime economies, sexual compromise, and demanding liberties through lyrical content and an exciting stage show." The band are about as new as you can get, having only played their first show ever last month, but they are making up for it with a European tour that they're currently on as well as a limited engagement US run in July. The music itself has an obvious Le Tigre dance-punk feel to it, except far more pop-friendly...right up my alley.
