I've been majorly slacking on the More Music Monday series for the past month or so - I've just been so busy on the weekends that it's hard to sit down and work on this, but I promise I'll be better from now on (for at least a little while).

How do you describe a band like Bodies of Water? Is epic really the right word? The word "epic" brings to mind Led Zeppelin, eight-minute-long guitar solos, flying above the clouds - it doesn't really bring to mind the kind of music that Los Angeles natives Bodies of Water plays, a kind of choral pop not that terribly far from a Polyphonic Spree sibling, but not quite so much on LSD and not as cultish. And yet, somehow, a word like epic, once you listen to more than just a couple songs, doesn't seem entirely inappropriate. I wouldn't be surprised to hear a few of these songs in an upcoming movie or two, in all honesty. These are some Los Angelenos that will soon be considered among the leading edge of the LA music scene. Purchase Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink here.

Like I told Murder Mystery when I first received an email telling themselves about me, the majority of bands who email me asking to check them out are, in all honesty, not that crap. Every once in a while, however, a gem here or there will stand up and Murder Mystery is included this category. The band plays a brand of lazy, sunny indie-pop anchored by vocals that are vaguely reminiscent of The National, which combines for a few interesting songs at the least. Even at its most energetic, in "Love Astronaut," I still feel like the songs could be played laid down on a bright afternoon in the middle of the summer. The album, Are You Ready for the Heartache Cause Here it Comes, came out in all of its self-released glory earlier this year and while the album has its ups and downs and isn't 100% solid, it still has plenty of good songs and enough potential to warrant a mild bit of anticipation for an eventual follow-up.
