As those of you who read HSB regularly may know, while my taste in music may, for the most part, lie in the "indie" scene, I still enjoy some bands from the other worlds of alternative music that the standard indie snob may ignore, such as bands that may (gasp!) play at festivals such as Bamboozle or ones may appear on Fuse or MTV on regular rotation. Because of that, I've decided that, from time to time, I should highlight a band or two from outside of the standard internet-indie scene that you guys shouldn't ignore, just because their fanbase may be a bit younger, a bit more Hot Topic-ish, or a bit too trendy for you to consider even listening to them. The first band I'll highlight for this is The Honorary Title, who play a show at the El Rey tonight opening for Mae. The Honorary Title play a (dare I say it?) angsty and quite beautiful acoustic-driven pop-rock that, for the most part, is complemented by strong songwriting and catchy enough hooks that it's no wonder that a good number of their fanbase is made up of the younger, Paramore-obsessed kind of teenager.
The pop singles are catchy enough, but dig even deeper and you'll see that the band has more depth to it than most other bands of this sort. For your introduction to the band, you should listen to "Bridge And Tunnel," which came off their first album Anything But The Truth. The band has had another album since then, 2007's Scream Up And Light The Sky, which I admit isn't as good as the first album, but still - take a listen with impartial ears. Don't ignore The Honorary Title because of the genre of music that they are typically associated with.
