Benoît Pioulard is the alter-ego of 21-year-old Thomas Meluch who plays a surprisingly unique brand of experimental-folk-pop (if that's even a genre). After the latest psych-folk/freak-folks trends the past few years, you would think that they all start to sound the same, but then refreshing voices come along and sweep you off your feet. Pioulard isn't exactly a newest kid on the block, releasing his debut full length album Précis through Kranky last October, but he's new to me and doesn't seem to be that well-known, so here he is on HSB's More Music Monday. His music is refreshing, and I'll definitely be paying much more attention to this guy in the future.

Either I'm pretty bad at classifying bands (which is very likely) or I just have a soft spot for bands who like to defy genres and classifications, because Mt. Gigantic is another one of those acts that leaves you scratching your head when you try and describe them to your friends. The songs sound like they are taken from the practice reels of a large group of teenagers sitting around trying to make fun music, and I'll be damned if they don't succeed. Think art-school-rock in the vein of Rapider Than Horsepower and The Unicorns mixed with occasional screeching vocals (as in The Blood Brothers' little brother) and yet happy-go-lucky indie pop rhythms and sections. If you can handle the occasional use of screeching art-rock vocals, you'll probably like this band if you're looking for some music to have fun with.
