I attended the "secret" Spoon and John Vanderslice show this past Monday, July 16th at Little Radio with a friend of mine, snapping pictures while HSB phtographer Akmal Naim was still in Chicago for the Pitchfork Festival. The pictures aren't necessarily the best - it's fairly obvious that Akmal is the photographer, and I am, well, obviously not.
The show itself was small, hot, sweaty and basically everything you would want at an intimate show with such a large band (although some more air conditioning would have been nice). The band played mostly songs from their new album GaGaGaGaGa, but sprinkled in plenty of old hits, with a three-song encore consisting of 'Small Stakes," "I Turn My Camera On," and "I Summon You." This was only the beginning of an apparent Spoon blitz of Los Angeles, with the band playing at Cinespace the next night and performing in the KCRW studios the morning after (I believe). The band will be back on September 10th and 11th at the Henry Fonda Theater. The songs below are live songs but not from the show, FYI.
